Horsebox Trailer Training
IMAGE

Not all driving instructors are able to offer horsebox trailer training; however there are specialists in the field that are able to offer trailer training as well as horse box training. When towing a horsebox, there is more to think about such as the additional weight as well as the safety of your horse. Anyone who’s new to horsebox training may not know that the varying types of horseboxes require different licences

These licences range from:

  • B+E (Car & Trailer Licence) - This licence is considered one of the most basic in transporting horses. It allows you to tow a trailer to the back of your vehicle.

  • C1 Licence - Your C1 licence allows you to drive a larger single unit vehicle for horse towing.

  • Cat-C – This licence allows you to drive the largest horse box, weighing over 7.5 tonnes. This horse box lets you transport as much as 20 horses.

How to gain these dedicated licences:

In order to gain these licences, you’ll need to undertake special training, similar to that when you gained your driver’s licence. Your test will require you to be able to answer a range of safety questions as well as undertake a practical exam to demonstrate that you can independently tow safely.

You’ll need a dependable training company who is able to offer dedicated training when you need it. Ideally, a company who can provide a suitable trailer when needed as well a 4x4 would be most suitable, offering a consistent method for training.

It has been argued by many that by training with a separate trailer to the back of your vehicle, you will find any of the additional horsebox licences much easier to train for. Being able to navigate a separate trailer can be challenge unlike a single unit vehicle where your main concern would be the length of the vehicle. Even experienced towers may need refresher training now as a responsible driver.
